The SPAS-15 is a dual-mode 12 gauge combat shotgun manufactured by the Italian company Luigi Franchi S.p.A. Franchi are renowned for their semi-automatic shotguns and are a division of Benelli. In 1993, Franchi was acquired by the Beretta Holdings which is the current owner. Beretta has owned Benelli since 1983.
The SPAS-15 semi-auto shotgun is intended as a law enforcement and a military weapon, that requires reliability, versatility and firepower. The firepower is achieved by using a detachable, single stack box magazine along with the gas-operated semi-automatic action, so multiple shots could be fired in quick succession and magazine could be changed much faster than reloading a conventional tubular shotgun magazine. The Franchi SPAS-15 is based on the SPAS-12 with the similar pump-action/semi-automatic firing modes. The pump-action mode is required to reliably fire low-pressure ammunition such as tear gas rounds or other less-lethal projectiles such as bean bags. Unlike the SPAS-12 the SPAS-15 is fed by a detachable box magazine. The shotgun features a folding stock and a pistol grip safety. Amongst Italian troops the weapon is known by the nickname “La Chiave dell’Incursore” (the key of the commando) because it is used to blast the locks of closed doors. This is a great looking and unique shotgun with a lot of firepower!
The Franchi SPAS-15 were imported to the US for a brief period and less than 200 got to the US before banned in 1996. In Canada the SPAS-15 is classified as a prohibited weapon and restricted for ownership only to law enforcement and military units.
