The\u00a0PPSh-41<\/strong>\u00a0(pistolet-pulemyot Shpagina\u00a0Russian for\u00a0\u201cShpagin machine pistol\u201d); is a Soviet sub-machine gun designed by Georgi Shpagin as a cheap, simplified alternative to the PPD-40. Common nicknames are \u201cpe-pe-sha\u201d from its three-letter prefix and \u201cpapasha\u201d in Russian\u00a0meaning \u201cdaddy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The PPSh is a magazine-fed selective fire sub-machine gun using an open-bolt, blowback action. Made largely of stamped steel, it can be loaded with either a box or drum magazine, and fires the 7.62\u00d725mm\u00a0Tokarev pistol round. \u00a0The PPSh saw extensive combat use during World War II\u00a0since 1941 when it was introduced to military use and the Korean War. \u00a0Around six million PPSh-41s were manufactured. \u00a0According to the 2002 edition of the Encyclopedia of Weapons of World War II\u00a0the PPSh was still in use with irregular military forces around the world, mostly in the former Soviet countries, China and some African countries.<\/p>\n
