The AKM – Russian for Kalashnikov modernized automatic rifle. The AKM is a 7.62 mm assault rifle is a modernized variant of the AK-47 with a fixed wooden stock. The AKM was introduced into service with the Soviet Army in 1959 in order to reintroduce the original AK-47 to the military with improvements. It has become one of the most common AK47 variants in the world especially in former Soviet countries as well as African and Asian countries allied to the former communist regime. The AKM was replaced by the AK74 later in the late 1970’s as the frontline weapon of Soviet troops. The AKM has also been produced by several other countries as the original or local variants such as in Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Egypt, Cuba and more. The main improvements made in the AKM were mostly in the methods of manufacturing, making them simpler for mass production. As a result of these modifications, the AKM’s weight was reduced by approximately 1 kg (2.2 lb), the accuracy during automatic fire was increased and several reliability issues were addressed such as making it easier to control during firing and increasing reliability even more.
